Start with the utility named on your bill
Elizabethtown is the county seat of Hardin County, and more than one utility works inside the county. The City of Elizabethtown has a sewer tariff on file with the Kentucky Public Service Commission. Hardin County Water District No. 2 supplies water in other parts of the county, while HCWD1 serves Radcliff and Vine Grove.
Which utility bills your address depends on the service location. Read the name printed on your bill before you phone anyone about a leak or a high reading. Our plumber repairs the pipe either way, but adjustments and meter questions go to whoever bills you.
| Question | Where to find the answer | Why it matters for the repair |
|---|---|---|
| Who supplies my water? | Utility name on the water bill | Tells you who reads the meter |
| Who handles my sewer? | Sewer charge on the bill | Billing rules sit in that tariff |
| Can a leak bill be adjusted? | Ask the billing utility | Keep the repair invoice as proof |
| What is in my tap water? | Annual water quality report | Helps explain heater and faucet scale |
| Is Freeman Lake my source? | It was formerly a city reservoir | Go by the supplier on your bill |
Freeman Lake confuses some newcomers. It once served as a city water reservoir, so older references can suggest it still feeds local taps. Trust the current bill and the utility's report instead, and test your tap if white crust keeps building on fixtures.

Elizabethtown on the map
The map is centered on Elizabethtown, Kentucky, the town this page covers.
The drive down US 31W and where coverage reaches
Radcliff is home base, and Elizabethtown sits about 11 miles south along US 31W. That is a longer run than our trips to neighboring Vine Grove, which borders Radcliff on the west. So the dispatcher asks for the street address and nearest cross street before the plumber leaves, which saves circling once the truck reaches town.
Two highways shape the rest of the map. I-65 passes along the southeast side of the city, and the Western Kentucky Parkway begins at I-65 here. If the property is out toward the interstate, say which side of I-65 you are on.
City Hall at 200 West Dixie Avenue is a handy reference point for the older center. Rineyville is about 7.9 miles from the center of 42701, Glendale about 5.7 and Sonora about 11.5. The full town list is on our service area page, and the dispatcher confirms any address outside city limits before sending anyone.
Older houses near the original town center
Elizabethtown was laid out in 1793 and established in 1797. People have been building here for more than two centuries. That does not make every house old, and plenty are recent. Homes near the original center, though, can carry mixed piping from several rounds of repairs.
So the plumber names the pipe material before suggesting a fix. Galvanized steel supply lines tend to narrow with rust inside. Old clay or cast iron drain sections can crack or let roots in. A camera run shows which section failed, and you can often repair a short run instead of the whole line when the rest is sound.
Permit rules vary, so ask the city building department before larger replacement work. The plumber can describe the job in plain terms first, which makes that question easier to ask.
Storefronts, offices and rental units
With 31,394 residents at the 2020 census, Elizabethtown ranks as the ninth most populous city in Kentucky. A city that size has shops, offices and rental units mixed in with single-family houses. One clog in a shared building can back up several units at once, so the first task is finding which stack or branch is blocked.
Owners who need grease-heavy kitchen drains or restroom fixtures handled outside business hours can read about our plumbing for local businesses. Scheduling around opening hours is something to raise on the first call.
Renters should report a leak to the landlord or property manager, then close the fixture valve if water is spreading. Managers can approve work by phone. Tell the dispatcher who holds the keys and who signs off on the price.
Limestone ground, heavy rain and your drains
The USGS studied the limestone terrane around Elizabethtown because groundwater there moves through openings in the rock. In karst ground, rain can travel underground quickly. A floor drain that backs up only during long storms points to the sewer lateral or outside water, not a kitchen clog, so mention the timing when you call.
The Kentucky Geological Survey says never to use sinkholes as dumps. Hardin County water comes largely from springs, and what goes into the ground can reach them. Keep paint, oil and solvents out of yard drains too, and take them to proper disposal.
Ice storm weeks and frozen lines
The regional hazard plan records ice storms in the Hardin County zone in November 2018 and February 2021. Long power outages leave houses unheated. That is when pipes in crawl spaces, garages and outside walls freeze. Find your main shutoff valve before winter and show every adult in the house how to turn it.
When a line freezes, open the faucet it feeds so melting water has somewhere to go. Warm the pipe slowly with a hair dryer, kept away from water on the floor. Never use an open flame. If a pipe has split, close the main and call the 24/7 line, because a burst often shows itself only once the ice melts.
Before we arrive
Ten minutes of setup keeps damage small and lets the plumber start sooner.
- Close the main shutoff or the fixture valve if water is spreading.
- Stop sending water down a backed-up drain, including the dishwasher and washing machine.
- If you smell gas near the water heater, leave the building and call the gas utility or 911 from outside.
- Keep children and pets off wet floors near outlets, cords and appliances.
- Photograph water damage for your insurer before you start cleanup.
- Clear a path to the water heater, the drain cleanout and the main shutoff.
